On April 10, 2024, the Office of Childhood (OOC) received a complaint alleging the director is making sick employees who are throwing up and running fevers work around the children, causing illnesses to spread. Employees were threatened with a write-up, even with a doctor's note. The allegation is substantiated based on the following information:
5 CSR 25-500.122(1)(G) which states, "Staff or volunteers shall not work when ill if the health or well-being of children is endangered."
On April 17, 2024, CI Greer interviewed Caregiver Belen Jones, who stated on April 9, 2024, she went to bed with a fever above 100 degrees. On April 10, 2024, she woke up with a fever of 100.3 degrees. Director Sunarjo told Caregiver Jones she needed to come into work. Caregiver Jones came into work for approximately 50 minutes. She was sent home after being present for 50 minutes.
On April 17, 2024, CI Greer re-interviewed Director Sunarjo, who stated she has had an issue with staff calling in sick. She has been telling all staff who call in sick that they may be written up. She understands that it is a rule violation to make staff work when they are ill
On April 17, 2024, CI Greer reviewed a text message between Director Kim Sunarjo and Caregiver Belen Jones and the text message date/time stamp was Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at 6:05 a.m. Caregiver Jones indicated she had a fever the night before and still had an elevated temperature over 100 degrees. She indicated she didn't think she should come in if it wasn't under 100 degrees before 7:00 a.m. and asked Director Sunarjo what she thought. Director Sunarjo responded that she needed to come in and she would be sent home if there were extra staff.
