On September 23, 2024, the Office of Childhood (OOC) received an allegation that Child A (age 11-months-old), was left unattended/unsupervised in a classroom. Child A gained access to this room by moving boxes out of the doorway. After conducting an investigation, Compliance Inspector (CI) Jade Stewart-Martin found the allegation to be substantiated based on the following information:
5 CSR 25-300.040 (1) - Supervision and basic care shall be provided at all license-exempt facilities.
On October 2, 2024, administrative assistant Kelly Eime stated that the incident with Child A occurred on August 23, 2024. Room 301 and Room 302 are separated by a doorway and since July 4th, the door was removed and boxes were used to block access from Room 301 to Room 302. Ann Njoki and Isabella Cloeter were in the classroom. There were five infant/toddlers in the classroom with two teachers. Both teachers were feeding other children when Child A got into the neighboring classroom. Parent A walked in and realized he wasn't in room 302 and discovered him in room 301.
On October 2, 2024, caregiver Ann Njoki stated that during the incident on August 23, 2024, Child A had moved the box and got into the other classroom. She wasn't aware that Child A had got into the other classroom. She estimates that Child A was left unsupervised for approximately one to two minutes.
